The ultimate Ottawa spring cleaning checklist
7 min read
An Ottawa winter leaves a mark on your home. Road salt, boot prints, furnace dust, and months of closed windows mean that by April, even a well-kept house needs a deeper reset. A proper spring clean isn't about doing everything — it's about doing the right things in the right order.
Start high and work down. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the tops of cabinets collect a surprising amount of dry, dusty air from a winter of forced heating. A microfiber duster with an extension pole handles most of it; follow with a wipe of doorframes and window ledges. Only once the dust has settled should you move to surfaces and floors, otherwise you'll just redeposit it.
Windows are the spring signature task. Ottawa's mix of salt spray and condensation leaves glass hazy. Wash with a mild dish-and-water solution, squeegee off, and don't forget the tracks — a vacuum crevice tool followed by a damp brush brings them back. While you're at it, swap out heavy winter textiles: launder or dry-clean throw blankets and bedding, and rotate area rugs, which hides wear and extends their life.
The kitchen and bathrooms deserve a deep pass. Pull the fridge out and clean the coils (your fridge runs quieter and cooler), descale the showerhead, and run a cleaning cycle through the dishwasher and washing machine. These are the tasks that quietly extend the life of your appliances.
Finally, the exterior transition: sweep the porch, shake out entry mats, and give front-door hardware a wipe. The first impression matters, and after months of snow gear it's usually the most neglected surface. If the full list feels like a lot, that's the part we love to take off your plate — book a spring deep clean and we'll handle the detail work while you enjoy the season.
